addressing the issues in cocoa head-on

Tony’s Chocolonely exists to end all forms of exploitation in the cocoa industry. And so, we deliberately choose to source cocoa from Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire ’cause that’s where more than 60% of the world’s cocoa is produced – and where some of the biggest challenges lie.

In these 2 countries alone, 1.56 million children in cocoa-growing households are involved in child labour, 30,000 people are victims of forced labour and 60,000 hectares of tropical forest have been cleared for cocoa production since January 2019 alone.

13,347,031

kg chocolate sold

More and more people are discovering our chocolate. Last financial year, we sold 13,347,031 kg of chocolate. Growth is an important part of our commitment. Eh? It enables us to work with more farmers who benefit from our tried-and-true playbook for a fairer cocoa supply chain. It also means we can make more noise in the chocolate industry, inspiring chocolate giants to follow our example: sourcing cocoa according to Tony’s 5 Sourcing Principles, via Tony’s Open Chain.

17,740

farmers we work with directly

17,740 farmers who produce cocoa for Tony’s = 17,740 farmers who earn a higher price in the long term. And ’cause many of them have partners and children, the number of people who benefit is far greater.

We buy our cocoa per season. So, the number of farmers we’re working with this year is higher than the number of farmers who produced the cocoa for the 46 million bars we sold last year.

10,104

metric tons of cocoa beans purchased

All the beans used to make our cocoa mass and cocoa butter are all 100% traceable, purchased directly from our partner cooperatives in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.

We’re unique in this respect, together with our Mission Allies (aka companies that also source cocoa via Tony’s Open Chain). Almost no other chocolate brand sold in supermarkets knows where or how its cocoa beans are grown. They rarely build relationships with farmers who grow their cocoa. As strange as it may seem, this applies to the vast majority of certified (that’s sustainably produced and organic) cocoa.

10.6M

paid in premiums

In addition to the Fairtrade premium, we also pay a living income premium to enable cocoa farmers to earn a living income from the cocoa they sell. This premium helps increase the farmer’s income both literally and by enabling them to invest in resources that increase productivity, such as agricultural training courses and nurseries for new cocoa trees. The premium also reduces their outgoings by enabling them to buy fertiliser in bulk and install central water pumps and by making education more accessible.

Tony’s partner cooperatives

The cocoa farmers we source from are affiliated with our partner cooperatives, which include Kapatchiva, Ecojad, ECAM and Socoopacdi in Côte d’Ivoire and ABOCFA, Asetenapa and Asunafo in Ghana.
